Wood Finish Conservation and Water Damage Repair at University Fraternity House

Boston
MA

Designed by McKim, Mead, and White, the Chi Phi fraternity house sustained interior damage when a burst sprinkler allowed water to penetrate the walls and paneling of the mansion’s historic interior. Blackburn was asked to clean, conserve and repair the historic finishes in the dining room. The first step was to carefully clean the original shellac finish on the ceiling. Next we repaired the areas where the finish had failed and applied a coat of wax to all surfaces.
