Decorative Plaster & Gilt Restoration: US District Courthouse

New Haven, Connecticut

As part of a renovation of this Federal courtroom, we were asked to perform gilt and decorative plaster restoration for the ceiling and niches. We started work on the ceiling. One of the challenges was to match the gold paint that had been used during the last renovation. With some experimentation, we were able to match the color and purchase the amount necessary for our work. The conservation of the decorative plaster niches was challenging because they were thin and cast in burlap and not very stable. The final task was to polish the brass roundels on the entrance doors. We created a template to protect the leather, and using a brass brush, polished the irregular surface. Lastly, an anti-corrosive coating was applied to the restored metal surfaces.
